A new report issued by the CIPD highlights that the right to request flexible working is in fact no burden on businesses across the UK.
The report shows that only a small number of cases have achieved successful tribunal claims based on flexible requests being ignored. It demonstrated that businesses are not as apprehensive as often thought and actually most companies are working effectively with the requests. The new legislation which will be extended to all employees from 2015 hasn’t been as negative as media critics would suggest. Many companies of varying industry sectors and sizes are embracing flexible requests quicker than reports have suggested. They are realising the benefits of maintaining skilled individuals and that knowledge retained within the business holds them in better shape than having to recruit and invest all over again.
There has been a fear that when the legislation does become available for all, there will be an almighty flood of applications. Businesses of all sizes are already aware of modern work cultures and are adapting their work practices accordingly. Let’s hope this continues!
